Lane Closures Scheduled on Southbound I-95 at Broad Street Viaduct in Philadelphia for Bridge Construction

Lane closures will be in effect on southbound Interstate 95 between the Broad Street Interchange and the Girard Point Bridge in Philadelphia from 8 p.m. Friday (April 9) to 2 p.m. Saturday (April 6) for bridge deck construction, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation today announced.

Southbound I-95 will be reduced from three lanes to two from 8 p.m. Friday (April 9) to 12 a.m. Saturday (April 10); from three lanes to one on Saturday (April 10) from 12:01 a.m. to 5 a.m.; and from three lanes to two on Saturday (April 10) from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. In addition, a southbound lane will be closed on the Girard Point Bridge from 8 p.m. Friday (April 9) to 5 a.m. Saturday (April 10).

Motorists are advised to allow additional time to travel south on I-95 in this area while crews work on the southbound right lane to prepare it for resurfacing.

This operation is part of PennDOT’s $12.6 million project to rehabilitate the 3,000-foot long viaduct that carries I-95 over Broad Street. Built in 1973, the viaduct is 2,922 feet long and 109 feet wide. It carries 95,000 vehicles a day on I-95’s three northbound and southbound lanes.

Construction began in August 2009 and is scheduled to finish in December 2010.

Buckley and Company, Inc. of Philadelphia is the general contractor on the $12,593,064 project that is financed with 100 percent state funds.

PennDOT reminds motorists they can log on to 511pa.com or call 511 from any phone to check traffic conditions on major highways before heading out. Additional I-95 information is available at www.95revive.com.
