4/5/2010 I-95 Lane Restrictions 4.4 to 4.10

Lane Closures Scheduled Next Week on I-95/Girard Point Bridge in Philadelphia

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced that lane closures will be in effect next week (April 5-10) on the Interstate 95 Girard Point Bridge as part of the $70.3 million project to rehabilitate the 18-span structure.

The southbound deck of the Girard Point Bridge will be reduced from three lanes to two on Monday through Saturday (April 5-10) from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. the next morning for the resurfacing of the far right lane. Daytime lane closures may occur each day on the northbound and southbound decks from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for resurfacing prep work and the installation of overhead painting platforms.

Motorists are advised to allow additional time to travel over the bridge during construction because backups will occur.

This work is part of the $70.3 million economic recovery project to rehabilitate and paint the double-deck bridge over the Schuylkill River. This project is financed with federal funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

Work began last fall to extend the life, aesthetics, and ride quality of the steel truss bridge by repairing and strengthening structural steel members; painting the entire bridge; resurfacing the riding surfaces with latex concrete; replacing expansion joints; and cleaning the drainage system. The project is scheduled to finish in fall 2012.

The double-deck bridge, which is 5,163 feet long and 56 feet wide, was built in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

The tri-venture of Buckley & Company, Inc. of Philadelphia, Alpha Painting & Construction Company, Inc. of Baltimore, Md., and Liberty Maintenance, Inc. of Campbell, Ohio is performing the work.

PennDOT reminds motorists they can log on to 511pa.com or call 511 from any phone to check traffic conditions on I-95 and other major highways before heading out.
