PennDOT to Shift Northbound Aramingo Avenue Traffic onto Newly Built Lanes near Girard Avenue
Traffic Pattern Change Part of $8.8 million Project to Realign Aramingo Avenue and Improve Access to Aramingo Avenue from I-95 South

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation today announced that northbound Aramingo Avenue traffic will be shifted onto the newly built northbound lanes between Delaware Avenue/Richmond Street and York Street in the City of Philadelphia on Friday (April 30) after the morning rush hour.

This traffic switch and realignment of Aramingo Avenue is part of PennDOT’s $8.8 million project to improve travel through the Interstate 95/Girard Avenue Interchange. Construction began last September and is scheduled to finish by July 1.

In addition to constructing the new northbound lanes of Aramingo Avenue, crews have worked the past seven months to build a temporary off-ramp from southbound I-95 to southbound Aramingo Avenue at the Girard Avenue Interchange, and to relocate several utility lines in the interchange area.

The temporary ramp is under construction immediately adjacent to the existing southbound I-95 off-ramp to Girard Avenue. This spur ramp will provide southbound I-95 drivers with direct access to southbound Aramingo Avenue and the waterfront area along Delaware Avenue. A traffic signal also will be installed later this spring to control left turns from the spur ramp onto southbound Aramingo Avenue.

This project is the first of six separate contracts to move into construction as part of PennDOT’s $900 million program to improve the I-95/Girard Avenue Interchange, which includes rebuilding I-95 between Race Street and Allegheny Avenue. Construction of the remaining five contracts will start at various times over the next seven years.

As part of the ongoing construction, the Girard Avenue ramp to northbound I-95 and northbound Aramingo Avenue has been permanently closed and detoured. The posted detour directs eastbound Girard Avenue drivers onto Richmond Street, from where they can reach the ramp to I-95 North or access northbound Aramingo Avenue.

The James J. Anderson Construction Co., Inc. of Philadelphia is the general contractor on the $8,811,613 project that is financed with 90 percent federal and 10 percent state funds.
