Residents, City recommend no noise walls in Tacony Open House in Frankford PennDOT held an Open House on April 24 at Frankford High School to provide information and solicit public comment on projects to improve Interstate 95 and its interchanges at Bridge Street and Betsy Ross Bridge/Aramingo Avenue in Philadelphia. At the meeting, PennDOT and its engineering teams reported on the recommendations from a recently completed combined traffic study for both interchange areas. The recommendations include changes to the interchanges’ ramp systems to improve access to the interstate and remove commercial traffic from some neighborhood streets. The traffic study was conducted as part of the Preliminary Engineering phase for the I-95 Bridge Street Interchange and I-95 Betsy Ross Interchange improvement projects. PennDOT expects to complete the Preliminary Engineering phase of both projects in late 2008 and begin Final Design in 2009. Final Design is expected to last three years. Construction will start at the completion of the Final Design phase. Below are links to the graphics which were used at the Open House. I-95 Reconstruction At a Glance... PennDOT's engineering teams are designing significant interchange improvements at Cottman Avenue and at Girard Avenue. Early stage construction at Cottman could begin in late 2008. Preliminary work at Girard also could be underway late in 2008. Click on the icons above for updates on the work underway on those two projects. Preliminary Engineering activities are underway as well on projects to reconstruct the bridges and roadway on other original sections of I-95 north of Center City Philadelphia between Cottman and Girard. Click on the drop-down menu above, or on the link below, for fact sheets on the work that is being planned in those areas. PennDOT completed Phase 3 of I-95 reconstruction in late 2005 when work wrapped up between the Academy Road and Cottman Avenue interchanges. With reconstruction of this section of roadway and six bridges finished, full capacity has been restored, with three through lanes available as well as a fourth lane that runs uninterrupted as a continuous on-off lane between the interchanges. In addition to the Cottman-to-Academy section of I-95, the Westmoreland Viaduct, located between the Betsy Ross Bridge and Allegheny Avenue interchanges, has been rebuilt. PennDOT also completed an $86.5 million project to a build a new ramp from I-95 to Philadelphia International Airport in mid-2002. Please continue to use this website to check the progress of PennDOT's ongoing initiative to rebuild I-95 and its bridges in Philadelphia. Details about the individual projects that make up the overall initiative are available in project fact sheets.
